About UCC
Yancoal Australia Pty Ltd acquired ownership of the Ultra Clean Coal (UCC) patented technology in December 2009 as part of the corporate takeover of Felix Resources.
UCC is a process for producing a high purity, chemically cleaned coal that can be used to fuel Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) such as Diesel engines and gas turbines to generate electricity with high efficiency.
Typically ICE can convert 50 to 55 per cent of the energy in the fuel into electricity whereas black coal fired power stations in Australia only convert 33 to 35 per cent.
Thanks to this improved efficiency, UCC is an environmentally preferable alternative to conventional coal power generation as there is less carbon dioxide (the main greenhouse gas) emitted per unit of electricity produced. Our studies indicate that UCC is generally a lower cost fuel when compared to common fossil fuels such as Natural Gas, Heavy Fuel Oil and Diesel. The latter’s price will of course fluctuate in line with crude oil prices.
