UCC Pilot Plant
Yancoal Australia Pty Ltd's wholly owned subsidiary, UCC Energy Pty Ltd,
owns and operates a pilot plant at Cessnock in the Hunter Valley, New South
Wales. The nominal 350 kg/h facility was
built in 2001-02 and upgraded in 2007-08. Some $45 million invested in UCC
research and development to date has been funded by UCC Energy Pty Ltd and
Australian Government grants.
The pilot plant is operated for 24 hour/day operation, 4 days/week. The plant is well suited to
producing large quantities of UCC from different coal feeds as required. The
plant is also used for process development work with the twin aims of improved
economics and reduced carbon footprint.
UCC produced in the pilot plant has been sent to Japan for evaluation. Test
results indicate UCC is suitable for efficient gas turbine combustion.
